#1StudentNWI: Lake Central Stays Focused this Spring

What's Going On:

Excitement is beginning to build and senioritis is in full swing for all graduating seniors. With the 2017-2018 school quickly coming to an end, students are preparing for their final tests and dances.

April has been a month of testing and banquets. Mr. Volk’s art class created a sculpture to raise awareness for Autism Awareness month. The sculpture sits on the Northeast corner of the campus.

1Student-LC-April-2018-02On April 10 the class of 2019 took one of their first steps towards college. All Juniors took their SAT’s with their PTE teachers. Several banquets also took place this month. On April 12 the Academic Letter Winners held their banquet at St. Maria Goretti in Dyer. On April 20 the heavily anticipated Senior Banquet is set to take place, where the class of 2018 will meet one last time under one roof before their big day at commencement. On April 28 Lake Central is hosting their third annual color run and on April 29 Dollars for Scholars is holding their banquet.

AP classes are finishing their last unit tests and preparing for the AP tests that are set to start immediately the weekend after Prom. AP testing will go from May 7 through May 18. Following AP testing will be Finals Week, May 21-25. Students will wrap up the 2017-2018 school year on May 25 this year and staff will conclude their school year on May 29.

Good luck to all students who are testing and to our Seniors who are graduating. We wish you the best as you embark on a new journey in life.

Student Spotlight:

1Student-LC-April-2018-04Tyler Good is a Senior at Lake Central. Throughout his four years he has consecutively kept a 3.9 GPA or above and has been an Academic Letter Winner within the school.

“I have been an ALW for seven semesters and this year will be my eighth,” Good said.

On top of being a four year ALW, Good is on the Lake Central boys golf team. Good is a varsity player who is on his second year of Varsity.

“I picked up golf over the summer of my freshman year and I tried out following. I've played JV and Varsity ever since and I don’t regret it at all,” Good said.

Being a student athlete can be time consuming and Good has found that time management has been key to all the events he does.

“We practice until 5:30-6:00 and then you get home and have a couple of hours to get your homework done, and if you use your time adequately you will have plenty of time to get it finished and still get plenty of rest for the next day,” Good said.

Good also is a member of the National Honor Society, Dollars for Scholars, and Senior Class cabinet. Outside of school, Good gets involved in Lake Central Youth Basketball and he helps out at his church. His personal life includes hanging out with friends, playing video games and going to see movies.

Good plans to attend college at Purdue University West Lafayette and major in Industrial Management. As he prepares to head into the next stage of his life Good feels that Lake Central has prepared him for what's to come.

“I think Lake Central has done a great job preparing me," said Good. "If you take the honors and AP classes here they do a great job, especially Mr. Smith’s AP Chemistry class. It is what has helped me the most and has been the most college-like class. I’ve learned to manage my time with all of the activities I do and I feel prepared for college.”

Staff Spotlight:

1Student-LC-April-2018-05Sherrie Bereda is one of the numerous workers in the guidance department at Lake Central. Usually recognized as one of the secretaries who sit out front, she does more than just sign students passes and work at the front desk. Bereda, who is on her fourth year at Lake Central, does the Lunch and Learns, helps with schedule issues in the fall, and helps students get into colleges of their choosing in the spring.

Bereda got her start in education 12 years ago when she began to substitute teach. Before she began teaching, she'd gotten a Masters Degree but opted to stay home to raise her children.

“Ironically enough, when I started substitute teaching I was not in education at all and I loved working with high school kids. When a job opened at the guidance department I jumped on it,” Bereada said.

Bereda’s days are all different but she breaks her work into seasons. In the fall she helps contact schools and submit applications. In the middle months of the year she hits a slow point but when spring arrives she picks back up with graduation and commencement. All of the work can be stressful but Bereda has found ways to get through it.

“You just learn to balance it - it’s really the time when we have to submit all those applications by November 1 when it gets crazy. This time of year I have to make sure I don’t leave anyone out of the Senior Honors Breakfast. For the most part I take a breath and just plow on through with the work just like the kids do with their classes,” Bereda said.

Though the work can be long, time consuming, and at times stressful, Bereda returns every day to see the impact she can make.

“I love working with high school kids. It is so rewarding to see the students get into the school they want to,” Bereda said.

When Bereda is not at Lake Central you can find her camping or visiting her Alma Mater, Purdue, which her children currently attend. Bereda’s favorite vacation destination is Hilton Head Island where she enjoys spending as much time as she can on the beach.

“I didn’t want to work with kids when I was in high school. I have come to appreciate being able to work with some of the greatest kids in the world and that I get to play a small role as they move on in their lives,” Bereda said.
