#1StudentNWI: Lake Central Rises as Temperatures “Fall”

Lake Central Athletics
As the leaves begins to fall and school is finally in full swing, Lake Central continues to look for success in all aspects of the school. As fall sports begins their postseason play, theatre prepares for its fall show and underclassmen get ready for testing. Great things are on the horizon for the Indians.

On Saturday, October 8, LC athletics took center stage in the region. To start the day, the girls cross country team took home the sectional title in a hard fought race. Along with the team success, senior Sarah Hunsley broke the school record by posting a race time of 18:07. Just hours after the girls won, the boys cross country team won their sectional race as well.

Later on that night, the varsity girls soccer team was defeated in their sectional final against the Highland Trojans, with a final score of 4-0. A few minutes after the girls loss in Highland, the boys soccer team won their sectional game against the Trojans with a final score of 3-0.

After a 1-5 start, the team has won two straight games and will play their last regular season game on Friday, October 14 at home against Valparaiso.

Lake Central Theatre Company
Off of the fields and onto the stage, the Lake Central Theatre Company is getting set for their fall performance of “James and the Giant Peach.” On October 25 and 26, students from Lake Central elementary schools will be taking field trips to watch a special performance of the play. All of the elementary students have been reading the story of James at home with their parents and come together at school each day to discuss the previous night's reading. Senior Adam Gustas will be highlighting the play as James.

Lake-Central-1Student-October-2016_04Homecoming Week
After a turnout of about 400 students at the first annual semi-formal Homecoming dance, LC doubled their number for round two. Over 800 students filed into the sold out dance on Saturday, October 1, as “Club Blue” took the place of what is normally the school foyer.

One student, senior Brandon Hernandez, said he was “unsure about the large amount of people,” but thought it was “handled perfectly.” Along with the dance, the Homecoming pep rally helped bring spirit back into the school.

The school kicked off spirit week with “Jersey Day” and continued the week with “Twin Day,” “‘90s Day,” “USA Day” and “Blue and White Day,” which is when the pep rally was held.

The rally was highlighted by a hot dog eating contest in which senior Maxwell Pattison took the win, only to vomit minutes after. It was gross, trust me. Later that night, seniors Dakota Barnett and the aforementioned Hunsley took the Homecoming king and queen honors.

Lake-Central-1Student-October-2016_03Student Opportunities
On Wednesday, October 19, freshman, sophomores and juniors will be taking PSAT testing. This test allows students to prepare for real testing situations such as the SAT and ACT, and it also qualifies students to be potential National Merit Scholars.

In September, five Lake Central seniors were informed that they had been named National Merit Scholar Semifinalists for the 2017 competition. Those five students are Nicole Geer, Joseph Gryzbek, Nathan Jackson, Candace Jarzombek and Justin MacNeill.

Although seniors are not going to be taking the PSAT testing, numerous things will be set up for them to work on. Options include making “Instant Decision” with representatives from Purdue University Northwest or Indiana University Northwest, job shadowing, visiting colleges or much more.

The goal of Lake Central is to give students an opportunity to succeed at any time in any moment, and the administration would never take an opportunity like this one and let it slide.

Lake Central News
Twitter, Instagram and Facebook have been Lake Central Publications’ easiest ways of getting news out through social media, but earlier this year a new edition was made.

For the first time ever, Lake Central News created their own Snapchat account (LCNews). After months of trying to find ways to promote their product and struggling with what to post, a solid solution has finally been made. On the account, a follower will most frequently see updates of big events involving students around the school, such as football games.

Along with that, there will usually be one or two “themes” posted throughout the week in which the social media managers find fun topics to put on their “Snapchat story.” The most frequent theme throughout this school year has been “Tongue Twister Thursday” in which videos are posted of students and staff trying their best to pronounce popular tongue twisting phrases.

With the fall season coming upon “The Region,” Lake Central High School has continued to find ways to “rise.” Whether it has been on the football field, on the stage or in the classroom, the Indians have continued to make headlines and have brought pride to the community. With opportunities coming from all directions, only big things are coming from the big student body of LC.
