#1StudentNWI: Lake Central High School’s Winter Happenings

DECEMBER REVIEW
December was a shorter month for Lake Central classes due to winter break, however the days were still jam-packed and the school was humming with activity and excitement. On Dec. 8 and Dec. 9, formal tickets went on sale for seniors only. After that on the two days following, the ticket sales were open for sophomores and juniors as well. Shortly after the tickets became available to everyone, they sold out. Due to high demand, the office announced that if anyone was second guessing their decision of buying the $35 ticket, they could bring it into the office and return it for a full refund. From there, the ticket spot was passed on to a student on the waiting list.

“It took me like 20-25 minutes [to get my ticket]. It sold out last year and it wasn’t that bad so I don’t think the [space at the banquet hall] should be any worse than last year,” Breanna Dobos (11) said.

In addition to Formal ticket sales, LC students also had finals on their minds. A few years ago, LC decided to move their finals from after winter break to before it instead. This way students were able to finish out the semester and have two weeks off, worry free.

JANUARY AHEAD
On Jan. 24, Lake Central students will dress their best and head to the Halls of St. George for Winter Formal. Some students are already well prepared for formal, dresses and tuxedos already hanging up in their closets. The theme for the dance this year is “Float On” modeled after the song by Modest Mouse.

“The majority of the winter formal committee voted on the Float On theme, which will consist of hot air balloon center pieces on tables and other cute things like that. We decided on the specific name of “Float On” because it is a song by Modest Mouse and it is related to the balloon theme that the winter formal coordinator wanted,” Maddie Hirschfield (11), a part of the N-Teens club that picked the formal theme, said.

Post winter break began a bit rocky. Students returned on Tuesday Jan. 6, and then on Jan. 7 and Jan. 8, they were allowed the luxury of staying home due to severe weather conditions.

“It was really helpful not having school. I had a test in my english class that I was not prepared for so having the extra days to study was very beneficial,” Joseph Pavell (11) said.

Though students were excited in the moment, they will still need to make up these days off at the end of the year.

TEACHER SHOUT OUT
Mr. Tom Clark, Social Studies, has been teaching at Lake Central for 33 years. In addition to teaching, he also helps run the history and Interact clubs. This year, the Interact club managed to get to 40 thousand cans for the food drive.

“We broke 40 thousand cans, we usually get to like 50 or 60 thousand. We kept all the food [on the third floor] so it wasn’t out for everyone to see in the hallway]. We probably need to advertise more,” Mr. Clark said.

The Interact club will be hosting a 5k later this year.

“Right now we’re working on doing a 5K Veterans run to raise money for a museum that they’re going to build for us in Schererville; a Veterans museum,” Mr. Clark said.

The 5K will be on the 23rd of May and it is open to the public. Sign ups and pre registration will eventually be online for $30. However, sign-ups will also be available on site at the race for $35.

STUDENT SHOUT-OUT
Jessica Nelson (12) has been living a healthy lifestyle since the end of her sophomore year. Nelson exercises as much as she can and keeps a clean diet in order to make herself the best that she can be.

“In the future, I would like to compete either in body-building or powerlifting. I would just like to compete and not even more for the fact of winning. I mean, it would be nice to win, but more for the fact of feeling the accomplishment of getting that far,” Nelson said.

Since Nelson has been living her lifestyle for almost two years, she has advice for anyone who needs it.

“Don’t be afraid to lift; that is the biggest thing, especially for girls. They’re terrified to lift. They think it’s going to make them manly, but it won’t. Just lifting a little bit of weight is not going to make you big. Don’t go to extremes with your eating. It restricts you from life and from family. Learn to enjoy it. Don’t work out because you hate your body, work out because you love your body and want to make it better,” Nelson said.
