What Happened:
The year is winding down for Lacrosse students as May is quickly approaching. On the same note, a lot of important testing and events are being crammed into these last few months. It seems like every day now has an air of importance.
The Girls’ Book Group met up with some Valparaiso high school students as well as an older women’s book group to discuss I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced. They talked at length about the cultural differences present around the world, and the themes presented in the book. They were treated to pizza beforehand. It was a very enlightening experience, and many of the girls are looking forward to meeting with the group again next year.
Two Academic Super Bowl competitions were held during March. The Lacrosse science team placed first at the first one, and scored third at the second. Interdisciplinary got third at the first competition. All the groups are studying their hardest, and raring to go for the next one on April 17th. This competition, if they win, will allow them to compete at the state level.
The Tri-township Honor Society takes a trip to Chicago every year. Most of the time it is to see a play at the renowned Shakespeare theater. However, due to scheduling conflicts, they were unable to do that this year. Instead, they went to the Shedd aquarium. There they got to see many kinds of sea life, as well as take a guided tour and view an aquatic show. After the show was over, they were allowed to roam freely around the exhibits and eat. Everyone on the trip said that they had a remarkable time and, while not what they usually do, wouldn’t object to going again.
Tiger Team-Up Day was also the last day before break. This is a day for the 8th graders at Wanatah school to come to Lacrosse and see how everything is run. They also had a scavenger hunt, finding pictures of the principal, Mr. Owney, hung up all around. Before lunch, they got to meet with the students attending vocational schooling, as well as the Honor Society students. There they played a few games and got to learn more about each other and about the school. The day was bookended with an entire school viewing of the movie Wonder. Students were treated to popcorn and drinks during the film. It certainly ended the day on a high note, and set a good mood for the approaching Spring Break.
What’s Happening:
Students went on spring break the first week of April. They get back to school April 9th. Awaiting them is a slew of finals testing, including ISTEP for underclassmen.
Also coming up is the senior trip, which runs through the 19th to the 22nd. The seniors are going to Hocking Hills, Ohio, where they’ll be staying in a cabin on a large nature park. Students there will get the opportunity to make their own breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as zip-lining, hiking, and other nature activities. The trip will be supervised by Mrs. Bucher. All of the seniors, although unsure how it may pan out, are excited.
Mr. Roslansky, the math teacher, will take his higher level mathematics students on trips to Six Flags every other year. That trip is scheduled to happen sometime in May.
As previously stated, the next and most important academic competition will be held on April 17th.
Graduation for seniors is scheduled to be on May 25th. Many students have already started planning dates for their open houses.
Prom will be on April 28th. The cost of entry is $20, and it will be held in North Judson. 27th Best, a band local to the area containing high school students, will be allowed to play during the dinner period of the prom. It is sure to be an exciting time for all who attend with great food and funky jams!
Overall, the thing most students are looking forward to is that the year is ending, and another is beginning. They’re excited to wrap everything up and move on, and grow as individuals.
The middle school and high school band and choir performance is also coming up, although the date has not been announced yet. The students plan to play some selections from famous movie scores. They have all been working quite diligently, and are expected to put on a pleasing performance.
Student Spotlight: Nicole Green
Nicole is a sophomore at Lacrosse High School. Her hobbies include reading avidly, hanging out with her friends, making bad puns, and always dressing to impress. She’s got a unique sense of humor and a seemingly endless well of energy. She doesn’t know what she wants to do for the future, but she’s “got two years to figure that out.” Best of luck Nicole!
Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Beaver
This is Ms. Beaver’s second year teaching at Lacrosse. She teaches biology and advanced biology. When she was younger, she worked as a ecologist in a wildlife reserve. She is very welcoming and friendly, although a bit strict when it comes to the curriculum. She hopes that students will develop an avid interest in learning about the world around them from attending her classes.
