#1StudentNWI: Keeping Active All Summer Long at Hobart High School

Volleyball Camp

In early June, the Hobart High School Girls' Volleyball team held a camp for young girls to develop and work on their individual skills as well as their ability to cooperate and work well with a team. Prizes and t-shirts were given to every child that attended the camp. It was five days for one week, Monday through Friday. Girls and boys as young as five years of age and as old as the 8th grade were allowed to sign up. Only one boy attended this year, but Coach Elizabeth Slough, the head coach for the Lady Brickies, said she hopes for more to attend in the future. The kids’ camp is held every year in the beginning of the summer. More and more girls have been coming each year, which has made all of the coaches and high school players excited. The program hopes to continue building, and with more children starting earlier, attaining that goal seems to be very promising.

Fall Sports Preparation

All of the fall sports teams at Hobart High School have been preparing for their upcoming seasons since the spring and all throughout the summer. Boys and girls cross-country, boys and girls soccer, volleyball, boys tennis, and football have spent countless hours training in the weight room and on the field/court. There is no questioning whether or not these athletes will have successful seasons. They may not win a state championship, but people can definitely expect great things this year from all the teams. There is a lot of talent that will be stepping up to fill the shoes of the graduated seniors. Be on the lookout for those special athletes.

Student Shoutout: Hayley Collins

Hayley Collins will be a senior this year at Hobart High School. Many may already know her name for being a great contributor on the girl’s basketball team and the track team for the past three years at Hobart. But even more people know her for being one of Hobart’s greatest role models. Last year, a young girl at Hobart Middle School, Alyssa Candiano, wanted to run on the cross-country team. Alyssa is legally blind. Hayley Collins decided that she wanted to help Alyssa achieve her dreams of being able to run, and she became her guide runner. Numerous articles and videos have already covered how amazing how amazing these two ladies are, but Hobart is proud to announce that Hayley and Alyssa will be running together again this year. Hayley’s family, coaches, teachers, and friends could not be more proud of her.

College and Career Ready Summer School Class

The class of 2016 was offered to take a weighted course over the summer of 2015. The class is called College and Career Information and Exploration Online Summer class. All of the work is done online, and there are five class meetings as well as a one on one meeting with Ms. Valentine Torres and Mr. Ryan Turley, who are in charge of the Office of Student Placement. The class requires completing a digital portfolio, narrowing down choices for college and career options, begin looking into financial aid for going to college, etc. The goal of the class is to assist students on their path to success and also boost their GPAs as well.

Teacher Shoutout: Chris Tomsci

Chris Tomsci originally worked at Munster High School and Griffith High School. Most recently he worked at Washington Township. He taught as well as coached girls’ basketball. The previous head coach for Hobart girl’s basketball. Mike Hamacher, left to go to Fegley Middle School in Portage. Tomsci is replacing Hamacher for the future seasons. He is big on defense and really giving 100% effort. Talking to any one of his players, they all have said how much they already like him, and it is only the summer. Tomsci will be teaching Algebra II at Hobart High School in the upcoming school year. Hobart is very excited to have him, and is looking forward to a successful season in girls’ basketball.

The Fourth of July is one day where Hobart really comes together. A lot of people look forward to this day to meet up with family and friends to have a good time. First comes the parade, and later in the evening comes the fireworks. The parade started at about 10:00 AM and went until about 12:00. It started at Mundell Field, circled around Hobart, and ended back at Mundell Field. Many community organizations, clubs and teams were in the parade. Some of them include: the Hobart pool, the football team, the Wolfgang (Hobart High School’s talented group of singers), River Forest’s band, Hobart’s band, and tons of businesses throughout the area. The streets were packed with people celebrating together.
