#1StudentNWI: Inspiration From Students and Teachers at Wirt-Emerson High School

“Genesis” Wirt-Emerson's First Homecoming dance
The prestigious student government association of Wirt-Emerson Visual Performing Arts Academy hosted the first Homecoming dance at Emerson on November 13th and it was a complete success! The student government officers worked diligently for several weeks this year to pull it off and have a blast!

Last Year, the Student Government worked really hard but was unable to host the biggest event of the school year, the homecoming game; so there was no way they could put together the first homecoming dance.

The SGA Vice-President says, “We worked really hard last year to get proposals written and have our first dance then, but there were so many obstacles so we were unable to. This year, however, has been our comeback year in a sense because we got it together and made it happen.”

The high school students came dressed in their finest dresses and ties and danced the night away in celebration of their school.

Itesiah Hunter says, “Everybody looked so nice! It was so much fun dancing with all my friends. It was definitely something new and fun!”

Although there were obstacles along the way they managed to make it happened. Good Job Student Government!

Student of the Month
NaTaija Johnson is a senior at Wirt-Emerson Visual Performing Arts High Ability Academy with roaring personality. She keeps herself busy by taking on big titles such as; President of Thespian Society and Honor Society President.

NaTaija’s English teacher Ms. Johnson says, “NaTaija is one of the most responsible students I know, she always has a great attitude and her ambition is commendable.”

She prides herself in her academic and performance achievements wearing her Honor Society and Thespian medallions whenever she can, to encourage other students to shine in their light.

I’Tesiah Hunter says, “Seeing NaTaija so happy about being a part of those activities really makes you want to join to see what makes them so special.”

Not only does NaTaija take special pride in her accomplishments as an honor student and thespian, she takes pride in making those around her feel special and cared for. She embodies the definition of energy by breathing it into her friends. She tells them jokes and gives them with intense sarcasm to ease the pain of day to day stress.

Maria Hardy says, “She’s very funny and fun to be around. You don’t often meet people who make you laugh and feel good about yourself at the same time.”

NaTaija with her achievements on and off stage is truly a special gift to the Wirt-Emerson society.

Seniors take it all
After the successful homecoming ball, the Wirt-Emerson students were pleased to take part in the homecoming celebration! In the celebration, the students from each class decorated their hallways, put together dances, and brought out the best basketball players of their classes to compete for Number one. Each class brought their A-GAME in hopes of being named the best class at Emerson.

Coming in first place of all categories was the Senior Class of 2016. They brought the spirit through their thoughtful theme “90’S Kidz”.The class painted their hallways in orange and blue making you feel as if you stepped into throwback “Nickelodeon”, adding the shows they watched in Elementary School. They gave the hallway life by adding music and playing hits such as “Poison”.

NaTaija Jonson says, “The hallway was a lot of work, there were a lot of amazingly artistic people working on it too. Overall, I was just really proud to be a 90’s kid when I walked down the hall.”

After scoring a roaring victory in the decorating category, the seniors took on the other classes in the dance battle of the century. Coming to a very close vote between the senior class and the sophomores, the seniors came out on top. The seniors put together a mix of modern dance with 90’s dance giving the audience a good “Old but New” flare.

Chynna Miller says, “The dance was tough choreography but we did it and it felt great afterward.”

There was no surprise when the senior class was victorious over the freshmen class in the final battle of the class’s event. The game was close, but the roaring crowd of seniors gave just enough spirit to help them win the game!

Teacher of the Month
Some teachers give students a gift that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives. Mr. Eric Johnson is a Junior and Senior teacher at Wirt-Emerson; he gives away puddles of wisdom in every little sentence that he says to his students.

“Mr. Johnson says something that makes you think every time he opens his mouth. He asks questions like how you feel about what’s happening in the world right now,”said student Kavon House.

Mr. Johnson says he enjoys teaching broadcast communication and speech because they allow him to have more interaction with the students.

“This generation of young people is at the cutting edge of new media. I think I learn as much from them as they do from me.”

Mr. Johnson is also a Pathway to college teacher; Pathways is a program that helps guide students through the college searching process.

He adds, “This is my first year with the program which helps student’s works to prepare our students for college. There are so many talented students here at Wirt-Emerson you can feel the energy as soon as you walk in.

Mr. Johnson with his wisdom and love for our students and our school is what makes him truly an essential part to our Wirt-Emerson team!
