What’s Happened
Homecoming week has just wrapped up at Hobart High School, taking place the week of October 2nd through the 7th.
Monday, October 2nd, the Junior versus Senior girls powder puff game took place at the Brickyard. Tensions were high as the athletes ran practice plays before the game. Once the eyeblack was on, it was time to play. The Senior girls dominated the Juniors by a landslide, but both sides played a great game.
For Hobart Brickies, homecoming is no joke. Theme days are taken seriously, with tallies of student participation taken each day as a competition against the classes. Each day of spirit week is an opportunity for one class to beat another, so participation is vital. This year’s homecoming dress themes included Jersey Day, Farmer Day, Celebrity Look-alike Day, Decades Day, and Super Fan Friday, where the students dress from head-to-toe in purple and gold.
By the time Friday hit, Seniors and Sophomores were tied with spirit days, so it came down to the pep rally participation and the quality of the locker bay decorating contests. After a day of lip sync battling, tug of war, and much more, the Seniors won the most school spirit and obtained the Spirit Brick.
On October 6th, the Brickies took an unfortunate loss at the Homecoming Game against the Munster Mustangs but grew from the experience. Success is still something clearly known by the Brickies, in their current 6-3 ratio.
At the game, the Homecoming court winners were announced: Princess Kayla Harmon and Prince Tyler Hunter, as well as Queen Caylynn Drobac and King Sam Ehrlich.
The dance was held the following day, October 7 from 7-10 p.m. at the school. The dance was themed as Luau and featured surfboard and tiki decor.
What's Coming Up
Following Football and Cheer Senior Night, which was held this past Friday the 13th, the Brickies will be heading into round one of Sectionals.
This upcoming Friday, the Brickies will play at South Bend St. Joe. Fingers are crossed and tensions are high for Hobart as they hope to fly the purple and gold W flag high.
Jordan Kraft, Middle Linebacker and Tight end, stated: “We have to play as a team. Going into the playoffs we have to know that it could be the seniors’ last game. The team has to come together and play for those seniors in those tough situations throughout the game. We have to buckle down in practice this week and work hard on our basics to get back in the rhythm of things. Our coaches preach to us that we have to go hard for 4-6 seconds every play.”
Besides football, as the season transitions to winter, other sports are beginning to kick off. Swimming, wrestling, and basketball have all started practicing or conditioning for their upcoming seasons.
There is a lot to look forward to in the coming weeks at Hobart High School.
Student in the Spotlight: Nadia Polizotto
Hobart High School Senior Nadia Polizotto has been doing outstanding things within her school and community for as long as she can remember.
Polizotto is known at Hobart High School for her intense intelligence, leadership qualities, and for her dancing skills, as she has been practicing the art since the age of four.
Maintaining a nearly flawless G.P.A, along with balancing immense hours of community service and involvement in several school clubs makes Polizotto an ideal student. Polizotto is involved in Key Club, Honor Society, Youth and Government, and Academic Super Bowl and has obtained leadership positions in several of these extracurriculars throughout the years.
“I keep myself involved and busy, and I've found that the more I allow myself to put on my plate, the more well rounded I become,” said Polizotto.
Beyond keeping busy within her school, Polizotto is a key part of Indiana Ballet Theatre and has been dancing there for 14 years. Over the years, she has been featured in several lead roles.
“Dance allows me to express my creative side without needing to speak. It might sound cliché, but it really is a way for me to lose myself,” she said.
Besides dance, she is interested in traveling, music, and art. Bands like Knuckle Puck, Real Friends, and really bands of any genre are all worthy of a listen to Polizotto. She has been to eight countries and plans to travel through Europe more once she is older. She also loves concerts and has seen over 30 bands perform.
Senior year has been hitting all seniors hard, but, regardless of the stresses of adulthood, Polizotto is able to take heed and lead herself into her future positively. She plans to attend Indiana University Bloomington to major in psychology, with a focus on speech and auditory sciences.
Teacher Shout Out: Mr. Alex Ramos
Alex Ramos is Hobart High School’s psychology teacher and a wrestling coach for the Brickies. He is one of Hobart’s most well-liked teachers and is always there with an open door to help students no matter the situation.
Ramos is a two-time state wrestling champ for Hobart, from which he graduated in 2000. He now teaches at HHS and leads wrestling in his legacy.
Students look to Ramos as a mentor and role model, and he is always willing to help any student improve themselves and work through tough times. As a coach and a teacher, he is a man of patience and tolerance.
Outside of teaching and coaching, Ramos is an adviser for Hobart’s psychology club and was also one of the main factors in putting together Hobart’s own TedX event. The event pulled together many powerful public speakers to discuss “Generation Z,” or the youngest generation.
The featured Student in the Spotlight, Nadia Polizotto, also played a large role in Hobart’s TEDx Event and worked cohesively with Mr. Ramos.
Ramos is an incredible teacher and makes HHS a better place, and all students could agree that he is an asset to the school.
