#1StudentNWI: Hobart High School “Finding the little things…”

What’s recently happened?

Sports at Hobart High School (HHS) have been astounding with multiple students-athletes going to State.

Keirys Click and Joanna Cantu went to State to represent the newly added girls wrestling program.

The girls gave it their all to compete at the state wrestling meet and will continue to make Hobart proud.

Daeges Morgan, a senior at HHS, has created a name for herself in numerous ways, but recently she has been dominating for the diving program. Morgan competed at State on February 11 to receive 12th place in the state.

Aside from these high-performing athletes, many winter sports are still in season or have come to a close.

The girls basketball team finished their season with a record of 14-11.

Co-captains and seniors, Nikolina Latinovic and Asia Donald, have performed highly throughout the season, pushing the team to win many games.

The boys basketball team is still in season and has a record of 7-10.

On February 10 they faced a known rival, Andrean, where the stands were packed full of supporters for the boys.

Boys wrestling is still in season and has just competed in regionals. Soon, people will know who will compete in the state meet.

Exciting things have happened for HHS in the athletic field, but the student council has announced that they will be selling purple and gold Pura Vida bracelets to fundraise for this year’s prom. They will be sold for $7.

Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) has held blood drives where so many people wished to donate blood that they were behind schedule by an hour and a half.

Hobart has had so many successes and will continue to do so.

What’s coming up?

At HHS, many fundraisers have begun to raise money for prom.

Also, All juniors will take the SAT on March 1, but before that, all juniors are required to complete at least 30 minutes of Khan Academy each week.

Good luck juniors and seniors!

Student spotlight:

This month’s student spotlight goes to Gabriela Moreno, or many know her as Gabi.

Moreno is a junior at HHS and naming her as a hard worker is an understatement.

Moreno is easily one of the most involved students in HHS.

Moreno is involved in numerous extracurricular activities including Brickie Leaders, National Honor Society (NHS), HOSA, Unified Track, softball, spell bowl, and was the president of the Spanish club.

With all of this on her plate, Moreno maintains superb grades and still finds time to hang out with her friends and make time for herself.

Moreno mentioned that one of her greatest accomplishments has been doing her community service project with her peers to create a hygiene drive.

“We’re still doing one big hygiene drive, but we will be taking feminine products to create feminine care or bags for fifth graders.” Moreno said.

Being so busy, it can be hard to stay motivated, “I’ve always had this picture of being so successful and like having all these things sometimes keeps me busy and occupied but at the same time I’ve always seen my mom have so many successes in life and I’ve always wanted to be just like her,” Moreno said.

Moreno’s tips for being a better student would be organization. She mentioned that she has a color-coded calendar that keeps track of her everyday life which helps with what she’s doing each day and it makes it easier for her to plan what days to hang out with friends.

“I have a pretty large group of friends. I believe there’s like nine of us and sometimes it sucks when we can’t all hang out, but when we do It’s great to see how we all come together,” Moreno said when talking about friends.

Despite all of the fun she has with her friends, Moreno says that one of the best parts of high school has been clubs. “I’ve met so many new people, I’ve had so many different events that I’ve never gotten to experience, like with NHS we’re helping host an inclusion prom like that’s amazing,” Moreno said.

After high school, Moreno plans to attend college and be a nurse.

“I’ve always wanted to help people, especially in health. It’s always been an interest of mine.” Moreno said.

Being so organized and accomplished, Moreno’s advice for underclassmen is to use your time appropriately.

“Take advantage of the extra help that you’re given. Don’t think ‘Oh well someone’s going to judge me because I need extra help,’ because no one is going to judge you because, at the end of the day, everyone is so focused on themselves they don’t care about other people. No one is going to judge you for academics.” Moreno explained.

“Find those little things that make you happy, like picking a candle out for the week, just find those little things that make you, you,” Moreno said when touching on life outside of school.

Moreno has created an environment in which she can succeed and many people can learn something from her.

Staff spotlight:

This month’s staff spotlight goes to an English teacher named Theresa Dietrich.

Dietrich went to a massive high school in Illinois where her graduating class was over 1,000.

After high school, she attended Indiana Wesleyan University which was a small college, but equal to the number of students in her high school.

Originally, Dietrich wanted to be an elementary school teacher because it is what her mom taught but wasn’t completely sure. Ultimately, she decided to finish her degree and pursue teaching.

Dietrich realized that she had enjoyed working with young adults after teaching at Ivy Tech Community College and Purdue University Northwest (PNW). She also received her master’s degree in English at PNW. After teaching at colleges, she started working for HHS in 2017.

“I love being in a safe space, that is my favorite thing.” Dietrich said when asked about her favorite part of teaching. “I really like to have little signals around my room like ‘This is an okay place to be yourself,’ so I’ll have rainbows all over my room and social justice posters to let people know how they can be in my room.”

“I want the world to be a better place. I want people to go into their adulthood feeling empowered and feeling informed, feeling like they know how to inform themselves, and that they can pursue what makes them curious.” Dietrich said.

Outside of school, Dietrich has a wife who she met in college and two cats named Mr. Stubs and Juniper. She is an avid crocheter and loves buying outfits, leg warmers, and backpacks for her cats.

Advice that Dietrich would give to people would be to find mantras that work best for whatever situation they may be in.

“Right now it is, ‘Do I need this on my plate, or can I take it off.” Dietrich said referring to events or assignments that she may not need to stress about.

Dietrich also sponsors the speech and debate team, as well as co-founding a writing center for HHS.
