#1StudentNWI: Hobart High School excitedly wraps up third quarter

March has been an incredibly interesting month for Hobart High School (HHS). Everything is coming to a closing from the winter season, yet the spring doors haven't opened up yet. Hobart High School has exciting plans for the months coming.

What’s happened?
Key Club

Hobart High School’s (HHS) Key Club experienced its District Leadership Convention (DLC) virtually this year. Typically, this event would be held down in Indianapolis and since DLC is usually a bonding experience for Key Clubbers, the members didn’t want this tradition to end. So, in a COVID-19 safe fashion, the Key Club members gathered in Heidi Polizotto’s room, the Hobart Key Club’s advisor.

Polizotto’s room was decked out in space decor since the theme of the convention was “Service in the Stars.” During all three days, there were a variety of different activities that the Key Club members participated in.

As this is Key Club’s main event of the year, where clubs from all across the state participate, many awards are given out for the accomplishments of the club throughout the year. HHS received a majority of the awards. These include: Key Clubber of the Year, Oratorical Award, Distinguished President, Distinguished Service Project, and many more.

Outside of winning awards at the state level, there were officer positions that HHS students ran for. At the state district level, Hobart’s Elijah Puente was elected as the 2021-2022 Indiana Key Club Governor.

Hobart High School’s Key Club Bulletin Editor, Caryssa Roark, applied to become the new Indiana Districts Key Club Bulletin Editor. After many speeches, Sunday night Roark was elected as the new Indiana Bulletin Editor.

Other than state positions being filled, Hobart’s Key Club had its elections as well. For the 2021-2022 school year, Louis Gallegos is named the new president, followed by Kendall Lemon as the Vice President. Aoife Combs will be the new secretary, Piper Logan will become the Treasurer, and Jeydan Fifer will be returning as the Webmaster.

Winter sports awards

During the weeks of March, winter sports awards were being held. Many of these sports were on different days to ensure that athletes who participated in more than one sport, would be able to make it to all award ceremonies. This also helped maintain social distancing.

Here, athletes were given their awards for their successes throughout their winter season. This were at a program level, including awards such as Mental Attitude Award or Most Improved, as well as state-recognized awards, such as 1st Team All-Conference.

Boy’s Swimming and Diving

After a long season, the boys swimming and diving season ended at the state finals, with junior Ethan Ferba representing HHS at the meet. Ferba started his diving career freshman year and has improved tremendously throughout the seasons.

Last year, Ferba ended his sophomore season also at the state competition. While he fell short from the final round at the state competition his sophomore year, it motivated him to do even better the next season.

Ferba did just that this season, his junior year, by making it to the Indiana Diving State Finals, and placed 16th out of the 31 state qualifiers.

Spread the Love

Hobart High School’s Key Club recently ended their Spread the Love campaign which consisted of students bringing in jars of peanut butter and jelly to their sixth-hour classes to be donated to the Hobart Food Pantry. To add a competitive edge, the class with the most jars got a class prize. Guillermina Freytes’ class won, earning the class prize. There were over 200 jars donated to the local food pantry.

Inclusion week

Brickie Leaders introduced an inclusion week just before Spring Break began as a way to show the love and Brickie pride that is plastered throughout the school. These themes included Twin Day, Mixmatch Day, Brickie Day, and many more!

What’s happening?
Academic Superbowl

Hobart High School’s Academic Superbowl Team is having a huge competition coming up. After two other competitions, some subjects are showing great improvement and potential and Hobart is excited for a chance to potentially go to state. This upcoming competition on April 20 will determine the fate of the High School Team.

Track

It has been announced by the IHSAA that the indoor track season will be canceled due to COVID-19 concerns. However, this is not stopping the Brickies! They are training harder than ever before, to make the next indoor season the best yet.

All Test-Day

HHS will be hosting all All-Test Day on April 13 for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. This will be an opportunity for freshmen and sophomores to take the PSAT, and for the juniors to take the SAT.
