#1StudentNWI: Hammond High School Rewards Students for “Pawsitive Attitudes”

hammond-1student-nwi-pawsitive-attitudeHammond High Wildcats live by these common core values: Positive, Accountable, Integrity, Respectful, Responsible. Students and staff who show these values are recognized by the Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) team at HHS.

PBIS members include Ms. Coslet, Mrs. Morris, Mr. Bailey, Mr. Goodlow, Mr. Moore, Ms. Troxell, Ms. Sablich, Mrs. Mathewson, Ms. Coffin, Ms. Ginn, and Mrs. Brown.

The PBIS team is, “Charged with working to create a positive cognitive change in the hearts and minds of students with the use of positive program presentations, reinforcing appropriate and positive behaviors and recognizing the teaching community and staff of Hammond High as the influencing force behind the change,” said by member Mr. Williams, who is also a teacher at HHS.

The team nominates student of the month, teacher of the month, staff member of the month and any student that was noticed doing something positive at anytime. When "caught" in action of doing something positive, an adult gives the student a "PAWS Ticket." When handed that ticket, the student is to go in the office and place it in one of the four buckets that display grades 9 to 12. Once every week, two tickets are drawn from the buckets and the students selected are to pick a prize from the list.

In the past the team has held a party for particular students that have been chosen. Williams says, “In the future we are planning field trips to take these students on to reward them for the positive behavior that they display on a daily basis. I love the program and enjoy working with my fellow PBIS members.”

Hammond will continue to award students for their excellent and “Pawsitive" attitudes.
