1StudentWashingtonTownshipHSOct1Fall Sports All-Conference Winners
Since all of the fall sports are coming to an end, it is time for all PCC conference coaches to vote on who will make this year’s all-conference team. To be a part of the all-conference team, different PCC coaches must vote for players with the necessary skills and attitude.

This year Senior Kelby Cunningham was awarded an all-conference title for girl’s varsity soccer. This is her first year making the all-conference team for soccer. Kelby plays mostly defense on the varsity team. Since she is a senior this year was her last chance to be on the all-conference team.

She says, “I'm going to miss all the fun memories I had throughout the years. I met so many new people, created closer relationships, and learned something new every day. Our girls soccer team wasn't a normal soccer team, I mean that in the best way possible! Coach Goodaker had one of a kind practices filled with laughter, games, and stories“.

Kelby is going to miss her team when she goes off to college to play softball.

This year for the boys varsity soccer team, Alex Perez was nominated. Also, Nathan Line and Brock Papas were nominated for all-conference for boys varsity volleyball.

There were two girls varsity volleyball players nominated, one of those being Senior Lauren Kleist. She was nominated two years in a row and made it both times.

She says,”I will miss being part of a team with my best friends. After spending hours a day with a group of people to only seeing them for one minute in the hallway will definitely be hard for me”.

This is Lauren’s last year of playing volleyball so it will be hard for her to go after this year.

1StudentWashingtonTownshipHSOct2Homecoming Is Coming!
This year’s homecoming game will be December 4th. WT varsity girls and boys will play the Boone Grove wolves. The next night the homecoming dance will be in the atrium. Everyone is excited for this day.

During the week of the game and the dance, the high school will be having their annual spirit week. These days will consist of dress up days, decorating of the hallways, and the homecoming pep rally. Whichever class racks up the most points for being the most spirited during spirit week will win bragging rights for the rest of the year.

Sophomore Ashley Porzel is in charge of all the homecoming festivities. She has some big shoes to fill after taking Senior Kelsi Clark’s title. Ashley and the homecoming committee have decided upon this year’s theme for homecoming.

Ashley says,”The theme is a Hollywood Homecoming. We are basically decorating the atrium like a movie theater. We will have a red carpet, movie posters, and gold Hollywood stars”.

The homecoming committee is working really hard this year to create the best homecoming that they possibly can.

1StudentWashingtonTownshipHSOct3Nathaniel Vas Awarded a Big Title
This year Senior Nathaniel Vas was named a National Merit Commended Student. This means Nate placed among the top five percent of students nationwide who took the 2014 PSATs. About 1.5 million students took this test and he was included in the top few. Nate is the only student from WT to be named a National Merit Commended Student.

Mrs. Rea and Student Council Gives Back to the Community
For nine years, Barbara Rea has been in charge of WT’s Student Council. She proudly owns the title of Student Council Advisor. Mrs. Rea has done a wonderful job and has definitely created a long lasting impression on the community of Valparaiso.

With about 70 members of Student Council this year alone, Mrs. Rea has a lot of volunteers willing to help. The member has endless opportunities to volunteer and earn their required 14 hours and when a member has been dedicated they will get the benefits that come along with it. Truly dedicated members can earn scholarships, college entries, and even jobs.

She says, “To me, being a member of Student Council means becoming a voice in the school and a difference in the world. Student Council creates an extended family that truly cares about the school, the community, and doesn’t hesitate to help one another. A sense of accomplishment and pride is created as we do things for others and for the community”.

This year there has already been a handful of events such as the Valparaiso Popcorn Fest, Opportunity Enterprises Pack-A-Thon, and the VNA’s “Lorie's Lakeside Century” tour. There are many more events coming up in the near future for members of Student Council to volunteer at.

Mrs. Rea says, “I am incredibly proud of our students who devote so much of their free time to making the school, community, and the world a bit better. Their enthusiasm and creativity are boundless. We are going to see great things from these leaders of the future!”.
