#1StudentNWI: East Chicago Central High School’s holiday fun

What’s recently happened?

A lot of great things have been happening recently here at East Chicago Central High School (ECCHS). On Wednesday, December 8, the school had its Career & Technical Education (CTE) fair for all the freshmen. Some CTE classes include Radio & TV I and II, engineering, criminal justice, fire and rescue, child development, and much more.

The purpose of the fair was to show some of the freshmen many different pathways they could take later in their high school career, and maybe some of the things they might want to learn and make a career out of in the future. It was amazing to see students interests spark in some of the classes. The school is hopeful to see these classes fill up for the next following years for our students after the great turn out at the fair.

Being in the holiday spirit, ECCHS also had its Holiday Dinner Drive-thru on December 12. It was a very great day for all the families that came out and were able to get a holiday plate, along with all of the volunteers that helped make this great event happen.

On December 14, Mr. Kingsely came to the school to help seniors with cap and gown orders and get excited for graduation happenings such as a class ring, a hoodie and sweatpants that say 2022 on them, mega tassels, and more.

The holiday cheer doesn’t stop there, though. On December 17, Teacher David Lane was able to deliver goodie bags to all of the students and teachers here at ECCHS. It was a hard thing to pull off, but he did it and put smiles on all of the students and teachers faces.

What's coming up?

After the many, fun holiday events hosted at ECCHS, everything has calmed down a bit as students prepare to take a rest. Finals have just passed and starting December 22, students will enjoy holiday break before the new year begins.

During break, students will take some much needed time away from classes to prepare themselves to come back in January with a strong, determined mind. Before students know it, the school year is going to be done, so striving to stay safe and strong this break is a goal for the ECCHS Cardinals.

Staff spotlight:

There are countless outstanding teachers at ECCHS, but one great teacher here that should be recognized is Shannon Singleton.

Singleton is a social studies teacher, specifically economics and geography, and many students say she is amazing at what she does. If students are eager to learn, Singleton will help them every step of the way as she is a very passionate, hardworking teacher and is a great example for all her students.

Singleton's love for learning was what motivated her to make teaching her career.

“I think there are two factors that inspired me to become a teacher: first, I really do love school and learning, so being a teacher allows me to continue to go to school every day. Secondly, my mom was a teacher and as I grew up, I saw how she believed teaching is a way to help ensure that all children get a solid foundation of learning and skills to help them make a successful life for themselves. I found that inspiring, and I strive to do the same,” said Singleton.

As the saying goes, we learn something new every day, and that’s the very definition of how Singleton likes to view learning and teaching. Thanks to this, she helps students here at ECCHS want to strive for the better, all because of her eagerness to keep learning as she teaches.

“As a social studies teacher, I enjoy helping students find connections between what we are learning and their own lives,” said Singleton.

Student spotlight:

Kiya Durham is a senior who is always putting her best foot forward and making sure that others are doing well. She is innovative, responsible, diligent, and a team player. She doesn’t mess around when it comes to her grades and takes school very seriously, while still having fun doing great things considering that this is her last year here.

Kiya is very involved in the extracurricular activities here as well. She is the co-captain of the cheer team and is going to be involved in one of the athletic spots we have here at the school in new coming seasons.

On top of everything else, she was named CTE Student of the Month. Kiya is accomplishing great things and has a great life ahead of her.
