#1StudentNWI: Court appeals At Morton High

What’s recently happened?

Teacher Jeff Swisher set up an educational event on March 28 for incoming law students with the accompaniment of the juniors and seniors. The Court of Appeals in Indiana hears appeals from the state trial courts. This involves cases where the statutes are declared unconstitutional, such as in Katrina Louise Fouts v. State of Indiana. Being able to visually see the court case in person gives the audience a clear view of how court trials truly unfold. Once the oral discussion has come to an end, the floor will then be opened up for any questions from the viewers.

Hammond Academy of the Performing Arts (HAPA) is proud to present “The Spongebob Musical" on April 20 through 23. The event will take place at Hammond Central High School. The show will commence around 7 p.m., lasting around two hours minimum.

Costumes have been customized carefully to each character by the students and staff throughout the school days. For months, costumes have been readjusted, improved, sewn, and decorated precisely to complete every scene. Mia Kimble, a 3D art teacher at Morton High School, has assembled multiple pieces for the show with the help of her class, creating different fashion statements for every character.

Staff spotlight:

Jeff Swisher is a well-known educator at Morton. A true gem to the entire school, Swisher is known for his widespread knowledge of all subjects. There was never a time where Swisher didn't know the answer or a possible solution. He has helped thousands of students over the years, making him a fan favorite. Students enjoy his lectures for the fact that they are intriguing. Swisher’s students are always engaged anytime he starts his lesson. He enjoys creating events to educate all of his students during each school year, inviting everyone to join.

“I wanted us to get an exposure to watching a real court case. We opened it up for anyone who was interested in being a lawyer or in law enforcement so they could see what a real court case looks like,” Swisher said.

Swisher displays reality rather than making scenarios. This allows all students to fully grasp the real world and what goes on behind closed doors. Swisher has definitely created a fun but educational environment for all his students. He was excited to host this latest event with the Court of Appeals.

“I contacted the Indiana Court of Appeals to see if it was something they wanted to do here. I did this once at Purdue University Northwest for Gavit Junior-Senior High School,” said Fisher.

The entire court case is still something students talk about to this day. Swisher has made learning more valuable. Truly he has opened eyes to the subject of history and government.
