School of Arts galleries present shows by fine arts faculty David Klamen, Giselle Mira Diaz

The Indiana University Northwest School of the Arts is announcing two gallery shows: an extraordinary exhibition of new works by School of the Arts Dean David Klamen and an installation by visiting lecturer of photography Giselle Mira Diaz.

Nonexistent, a collection of paintings and ceramics by David Klamen, will be shown at the School of the Arts Gallery located in the Arts & Sciences Building (3415 Broadway, Gary, IN 46408).

David Klamen is a contemporary painter whose work explores philosophy and ways of knowing.

His work can be found in the collections of some of the most prestigious art museums in the world, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York); The Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles); The Art Institute of Chicago; The Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago); The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; The National Museum of Contemporary Art (Seoul, Korea); and the Chazen Museum of Art (Madison, Wisconsin). Since 2017, Klamen has served as the Dean of the School of the Arts.

Rotten Fruit, a mixed media show exploring colonialism and agriculture, will be shown at the Gallery for Contemporary Art in Savannah Center (65 W 33rd St, Gary, IN 46408).

Giselle Mira Diaz is a first-generation Latinx lens-based artist and arts educator. Her work explores immigration, heritage and Latinx identity through various mediums. Rotten Fruit is the result of a research project that traced the United Fruit Company’s impact on Central and South American ecosystems. She is a visiting fine arts faculty for the 2024-25 academic year.

Nonexistent: Jan. 28 at 5 p.m. | School of the Arts Gallery

Rotten Fruit: Feb. 13 at 1 p.m. | Gallery for Contemporary Art

Both shows open Jan. 28 and run through early March.

The School of the Arts Gallery and the Gallery for Contemporary Art are open Monday through Thursday from 12-5 p.m.
