The Merrillville Pirates traveled to meet the Warsaw Tigers for shot to play for the state championship on the line.
The first half was a true clash of titans. The Tigers struck first with a short drive from Drew Sullivan, but missed the extra point. Merrillville responded with an explosive 75 yard run from Jac’Quarious Johnson. Warsaw defense stepped up later in the half with an interception by Tristan Wilson. Sullivan again ran it in from 22 yards out to put Warsaw on top 13-7. The Pirates punched back with a 35 yard TD pass to Dermont Bogard to pull ahead 14-13 before halftime.
Warsaw responded in the second half with a field goal and later a 36 yard pick 6 by Heady Cohen. The Tiger defense stepped up again with a fumble recovery by Gavin Schultz. Warsaw defense intercepted another pass and later added touchdown runs by Reed Tucker and Duncan Brody, followed by a 2 point conversion to Tucker to finish off the Pirates.
Warsaw Tigers will travel to Indy for the first time in school history to face Decatur Central for the 5A crown.
