Volunteers needed for upcoming tax season assistance program; Open House October 27

United Way of Northwest Indiana is seeking volunteers to help Northwest Indiana residents file their 2022 federal and state income tax forms during the 2023 tax season.

Operated under the guidance of the Internal Revenue Service, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides services to residents with an adjusted gross income of $58,000 or less.

In preparation for the upcoming tax season, United Way is looking for volunteers to serve as:

•   Greeters to help screen taxpayers to determine the type of assistance they need.

•   Tax preparers to use electronic filing software to complete tax returns.

•   Reviewers who verify all tax returns are in order before filing with the IRS.

“This service could not be done without the help of dedicated volunteers,” said George Kuebler, VITA site coordinator at United Way of Northwest Indiana. “It’s a great opportunity for retirees, bankers, tax professionals, accountants and more.”

No tax preparation experience required. Free training is provided. Volunteer hours are flexible. Continuing education credits available for tax professionals, enrolled agents and non-credentialed return preparers.

Volunteers can learn more at their Thursday, October 27, open house. The open house will be 4 p.m. and held at United Way of Northwest Indiana, 951 Eastport Centre Dr., Valparaiso, IN 46383. To register, contact to George Kuebler at george@unitedwaynwi.org or (219) 464-3585 ext. 128.
