Community Healthcare System Acute Rehabilitation Units recognized among top performing programs in the nation

Patients looking for quality rehabilitation services after injury or illness will find top performing programs at the hospitals of Community Healthcare System, according to Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation or UDSMR. Acute Rehabilitation services at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart and Community Stroke & Rehabilitation Center in Crown Point are recipients of the organization’s Top Performer Award for quality care.

“UDSMR ratings reflect our ongoing commitment to excellence, and the quality of care provided to our patients measures up to the top hospitals in the nation,” said Craig Bolda, vice president Acute Rehabilitation Services, Community Healthcare System. “Providing quality rehabilitative care is dependent on a whole team of healthcare professionals, who together, share best practices to be on the leading edge of patient care. I am proud of our entire staff and physicians who deliver this high caliber of care every day.”

UDSMR selects top performers based on Program Evaluation Measures (PEM) and compares those scores with more than 850 similar facilities across the nation for the past fiscal year (Oct. 2020 to Sept. 2021). PEM uses data from three-case level indicators of functional efficiency, self-care and mobility and two facility level indicators of patients discharged to home and patients discharged to further rehabilitation. Overall, St. Catherine Hospital, St. Mary Medical Center and Community Stroke & Rehabilitation Center ranked in the 90th percentile or above for the PEM quality measures during the past fiscal time period.

“In providing this analysis, our goals are to recognize facilities that perform at a high level, to work with them to learn how they achieve high performance and then share what we learn with others to elevate the performance of all,” said Tammy Schneider, manager, USD-PRO® (IRF) Product and Services.

Acute Rehabilitation at the hospitals of Community Healthcare System provides a full spectrum of care for patients with a wide variety of diagnoses that range from stroke, brain/spinal cord injuries and other neurological disorders to major multiple trauma and burns. Healthcare professionals share best practices so that the same high level of care is available to patients at all of the healthcare system’s facilities.

“We want our patients to achieve the best recovery possible in the shortest amount of time so they can get back to wellness and regain a good quality life,” said Bolda. “This designation serves as an acknowledgement that we have the processes in place to continue to provide the very best care to the residents of Northwest Indiana and the south suburbs of Chicago.”
