Crown Point takes 19th consecutive wrestling sectional title

Crown Point won their 19th straight Wrestling Sectional on Saturday afternoon, topping a field that included Lake Central, Kankakee Valley, Hanover Central, Hebron, Wheeler, Illiana Christian, Boone Grove, and Lowell.

The Bulldogs also won nine weight classes on their way to the championship, and qualified 14 wrestlers for the regional championship next Saturday.

“The team did a fantastic job,” said Branden Lorek, head coach for the Bulldogs. “The boys wrestled really hard, we just need to correct a couple errors and clean some things up. It’s all good, everyone’s healthy, and we’re going to get ready for Regionals.”

Lorek is already anticipating stiff competition at the regional meet, particularly from Chesterton who was the only team to beat them since 2008 at the event back in 2018.

“They’re a really good, well-coached team,” he said. “We’ll see them in a lot of the finals matches, maybe some of the semi-finals. They’re the team that we’ll have our eye on, and vice versa, but La Porte and all of our Duneland teams have some good wrestlers, as well as the schools like John Glenn and New Prairie who also have outstanding individuals.”
