Marjorie “Margie” Ann Schultz is the Duneland YMCA Senior of the Month. Margie celebrates her senior membership and activities year around, but she’s thrilled to be honored and appreciated this month for her contributions to the Y Senior program. Margie was born on December 10, 1939 in Boone Grove, Indiana and graduated from high school there as well. After high school, she continued her education at Ivy Tech in Valparaiso. In 1961 Margie married Thomas R. Schultz. They had two daughters, Chris Galvin and Debbie Siehert. Both of her daughters live in Portage, Indiana. The Schultz family enjoys traveling. Margie says she treasures memories of trips to Arizona, Mexico, Florida, Connecticut, Missouri, and also extensively touring Indiana.
Margie has a real passion for replicating the beauty of the Indiana Dunes and outdoor scenes on canvas. She loves to go to Kimmel Beach to paint because it provides not only ease of access, but also offers a sense of serenity. Margie says it’s easy to immerse herself in creating works of art because of the beauty of our local dunes. She also enjoys collecting beach glass on the beaches in Whiting, IN and transforming it into jewelry and sun catchers. Margie recently donated a beautiful dunescape to the Y Senior Center to be raffled off to help support senior group activities.
Marjorie was a member of the Chesterton Lions Club for many years, and enjoyed participating in the good works of the organization. She also had several years of celebration with fellow Red Hat Society members. Now she especially cherishes the many fitness and social activities she participates in with other are seniors at the Duneland Y. Margie says the wide range of fitness activities offered at the Y help her stay fit and healthy, and the social activities help her stay in touch with many life-long friends and also offer her the opportunity to make new friends. “Obviously I would recommend the Duneland Y’s activities for active older adults to everyone who’s looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle and stay socially active,” she says.
Y group fitness classes and seasonal aquatics programs to provide opportunities to begin or continue exercising in a safe, friendly environment. Group exercise classes for active older adults include Building Fit Friends every Monday, Wednesday & Friday at 10:30am.
