Children often learn and communicate best through play-based activities. All of the equipment and toys at Jacob’s Ladder has a therapeutic purpose. For example:
Rock Wall: Provides strengthening of upper and lower extremities; strengthens bilateral integration helping children to bridge the gap between the left and right brain hemispheres; increases executive functioning by allowing children to work on multiple tasks simultaneously; creates balance and problem solving skills.
Indoor Playground: Promotes increased vestibular input (for sensory seekers high input activity offers additional input while for sensory avoiders, the equipment introduces new stimuli to increase tolerance); rope climb helps to increase the function of muscles by allowing them to stretch during natural movements as opposed to manual stretching by therapists.
Trampoline: Stimulates more body awareness for children; provides vestibular input; increases peripheral vision and balance; high input activity for sensory children.
Pirate Ship: Enhances the ability to work on fine and gross motor movements in a motivational environment for children and also houses the sensory room including bubble tube and fiber optic lighting!
Jacob’s Ladder Pediatric Rehab Center’s Mission: Giving Hope to Families of Special Children.
Their Vision is for all special children in Northwest Indiana to receive comprehensive therapy and supplemental care so they reach their full potential, and for their families to feel fully supported and empowered.
