Colts Draft Analysis: Can We Just Pick Someone to Protect This Guy This Time?

I love cheeseburgers. One time, while meandering around some small town in some big state I came across a sign for “World’s Best Cheeseburger.”

I went in, because I love cheeseburgers.

And I ordered a hot dog.

This story is a lie, but it is as truthful an example as I can find for how the Indianapolis Colts have drafted in the past few seasons. Who, equipped with arguably one of the top three quarterbacks in the league, a running game that could use some help, and lightning quick wide receivers on offense that would like a chance to catch a ball that isn’t thrown from a quarterback being suplexed by a 250 pound linebacker, seem to not draft the one position that could really fix all this: an offensive lineman.

Point is, the Colts need a cheeseburger, but every time they metaphorically walk into the burger joint (NFL Draft), they come out with a hot dog.

For those who don’t follow the Colts like I do, let me put last year’s NFL Draft into perspective. Andrew Luck, the top three quarterback previously mentioned, was sacked 27 times in 2014, and it probably would have been closer to 50 had he not had the ability to run for at least one yard before being gang tackled by a rushing crew of defensive linemen and backs.

On top of that, the Colts’ running game was virtually non-existent due to the fact when a back was handed the ball, the defense was already in the backfield waiting for them like one of those horror movies where you run six miles and suddenly the walking bad guy is just there.

With that said, an offensive lineman in the 2015 draft wasn’t really a good choice, but a necessary, absolutely, positively have to do it choice.

The Colts picked none, opting for a Wide Receiver in the first round…

I don’t know, I really don’t.

I’d like to offer in-depth draft advice for the Colts this year, and do some Mel Kiper-ish mock draft, big board thing, but the fact of the matter is the Colts’ draft choices really boil down to one thing: draft a really huge guy that understands when someone in a different color jersey is running towards the quarterback he’s paid to protect, put your hands up and prevent him from accomplishing this feat.

This year, fortunately, the Colts have a pretty solid draft standing at the 18th pick, and the majority of the projections have Colts GM, Ryan Grigson (the hot dog guy behind last year’s draft), picking an offensive lineman.

But then again, Grigson the hot dog man loves to relish in thinking outside the tackle box…
